Good web design doesn't just look great - it also needs to work great for users too. When designing a website, there are multiple design decisions to make from the template, colours and fonts, content, photography, banners, navigation, calls to action and great UX or user experience. Come with us as we discuss each of these points in detail to help you create a well designed website.
What Makes a Great Website?
There are many different parts which when put together contribute to great website design, including:
- ease of use - the ideal website is one which does not require the visitor to think. It's totally intuitive, taking the visitor on a pre determined journey that meets the webmaster's goals.
- fresh and quality content - visitors come to a website to view the content on it. Providing high quality content is crucial for every website, and adding new content regularly makes search engines very happy and visiting to index the site often.
- easy to find contact details - your site visitors want to quickly see how they can reach you, and the more ways they can, the merrier. Make sure it is correct, that any contact forms are set up to deliver to the right email address and that you have a Contact page. Or even better, you have your contact details available in either or both the header and footer so regardless of what page a visitor is on, they see these instantly.
- clear calls to action - you want to leave visitors in no doubt about what they should do next upon visiting your website. So as well as giving clear and specific wording in your CTA's, you also need to make them instantly visible through the use of colours, text and buttons.
- good accessibility - having an accessible site requires it to be usable by all. This means avoiding overcrowded layouts, alt text for images, easy to read text, and viewable on a range of devices. Make certain that you meet the standards of having good UX by following our guide on how to check the UX of a website.
- colour palette - your colour palette should be consistent with your branding throughout your website. There should be consistent use of colour for different aspects of a page, such as headings, links, menus and buttons. Our article on how to choose a colour scheme for your website may be of use if you do not yet have brand colours to use, or are wanting to change them. Or check out some popular website colour schemes to help you instead.
- fonts and headings - just like your colour palette, your branding should have specific fonts and font sizes for the different aspects on a page. It is common for headings to be larger and use a colour that is different from the text body.
- page layout - the placement of text and images need to be carefully thought out. Make sure that you position the most important information above the page fold, including the call to action, as most visitors won't scroll down a page to find information.
